Saturday: An introduction to typesetting with wood and metal type. The class will set a collaborative broadside as an example and to get more comfortable using the Vandercook press (letterpress). Next, we'll cover the basics of carving for your design into a linoblock and how to layer type and pattern to create your two-layer print. Students will carve their blocks and prepare for printing the following day. Sunday: Printing & Typesetting! Today we'll print the two layers of our poster. The first layer from the linoleum block, followed by the second layer using wood type, taking turns on the two presses available. Further letterpress printing techniques will be explored if time allows. This course is best for those with an interest in type and typography, design, letterpress, and learning how to print posters. We will do some simple linocut carving, but it's more about the text and image working together to create an effect finished piece with a message!
